Ninety or so Faces: The Pilgrm's Exhibition on Portraits

Ninety or so Faces: The Pilgrm's Exhibition on Portraits

This autumn, The Pilgrm turns its walls over to portraiture. Curated by Stephen Rothholz, the exhibition features over 90 pieces from more than 50 artists. Some come from Paris flea markets, others from private collections, a few handed over by the artists themselves. Oil sits beside paper, wood sculptures beside photograph. Some names you'll know, most you won't and that, as it happens, is rather the point.

Among those on show: Janice Everett, a British designer turned New York-based artist with a Royal College of Art background; Polly Eltes, a former model turned interiors photographer; and Janette Beckman, whose documentation of music culture from punk to hip hop has made her name. Fun Fact: Beckman is no stranger to the building, she had her first ever solo show held here. Darren Riley has also returned, with sculptures featured in the exhibition, after his painted vinyl covers hung on our walls last year. There's also a single work by Eduardo Paolozzi, one of the original British pop artists, alongside pieces by Budwin Conn, an American painter who settled in England, and Friedrich Nagler, an Austrian refugee who made thousands upon thousands of naive artworks in his lifetime and showed almost none of them - a life story worth reading into.

Elsewhere, a painting by Pauline Denyer-Smith, who studied fashion before turning to painting under Euan Uglow at the Slade. Nearby, a photograph of Christine Keeler, tied to one of the twentieth century's more notorious political scandals. And paintings by Thomas Wright, best known for graphic, often gory work drawn from photographs taken in the operating room - though the pieces on show here are on the tamer side.
Every story here is entirely different, and none the same - and that's the beauty of it, since each is simply a reflection of its artist's own interpretation and understanding of a portrait.

The exhibition is now on display throughout the lounge and café at The Pilgrm, running until early spring 2027. Entry is free, and the full list of artworks and prices can be found here. To buy any of the artwork on display, please contact Stephen Rothholz using the details in the price list.

And if you're planning a visit, it's worth combining it with a Monmouth coffee, some brunch or turning it into a dinner and enjoying some family-style Malaysian cuisine from our latest pop-up, Duda Diner, who've taken over our kitchen until late December 2026, every Wednesday to Saturday, 5:30pm - 9:30pm.

Find us at 25 London Street, W2 1HH, just opposite Paddington station with access to Bakerloo, Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Elizabeth line.
